Chora Museum Istanbul

Early History: The original structure of the Chora Church was built outside the walls of Constantinople (present-day Istanbul) in the 4th century. It was initially constructed as a small chapel dedicated to Jesus Christ. However, the current building dates back to the 11th century.

Byzantine Era: In the 11th century, during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, the Chora Church underwent significant renovations and expansions. The church was transformed into a larger and more lavish place of worship, known for its intricate mosaics and frescoes.

Artistic Masterpieces: The Chora Church is renowned for its stunning Byzantine mosaics and frescoes that adorn its interior walls. These artworks depict scenes from the life of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, and various saints. Conversion into a Mosque: Following the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, the Chora Church was converted into a mosque and renamed the Kariye Mosque. The Christian iconography was covered, and Islamic elements were added. Despite the conversion, many of the original mosaics and frescoes were preserved, albeit often hidden from view.

Restoration as a Museum: In the 20th century, the Chora Church underwent extensive restoration efforts to uncover and restore its magnificent Byzantine artwork. In 1948, it was converted into a museum, allowing visitors to admire the beauty of its mosaics and frescoes. The Chora Museum, as it is known today, attracts tourists and art enthusiasts from around the world.

UNESCO World Heritage Site: The Chora Church was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985 as part of the Historic Areas of Istanbul. It is recognized for its outstanding universal value and its contribution to the understanding of Byzantine art and architecture.
